Cossack Statue in Rostov-on-Don In Russia: History,Facts, & Services

The Cossack Statue in Rostov-on-Don is an iconic monument located at the intersection of Pushkinskaya Street and Theatre Square in Rostov-on-Don, Russia. One of the city's main attractions, it stands 21 meters (70 feet) tall and is both a tribute to the courage of the local Cossack population, who heroically defended the city from the forces of Napoleon in 1812, and a symbol of Rostov-on-Don's freedom and independence. The Cossack Statue was erected in August 1918, with a five-meter iron banner bearing the inscription "Cossack memorial" topping its plinth. The monument was designed and created by local craftsmen, who made lance- and rifle-toting Cossack figures out of cast bronze. The inscription on the plinth commemorates the Cossacks' victory over the French and reads, "They [the Cossacks] withstood the enemy's fury, and the inhabitants and Rostov-on-Don were defended". The monument is an important cultural landmark and has become the symbol of Rostov-on-Don. The monument is also part of a number of tourist attractions, such as guided tours around the city, starting from the Cossack Statue and ending at the Don River. The Cossack Statue is open to visitors throughout the year, and there is no charge for admittance.
