History:

Cathedral of Christ the Saviour was originally built in 1839 as a memorial to the victory of the Russian forces over Napoleon’s army in 1812. The cathedral was destroyed in 1931 due to the Soviet government's policy of attacking religious institutions. During the early 1930's the Russian government began the construction of an outdoor swimming pool where the cathedral had once stood. The construction of the pool was halted and the cathedral was rebuilt in 1994, the same year it was reopened to the public. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Russia.
