The Bronze Horseman was commissioned by Catherine the Great and designed by French sculptor Étienne-Maurice Falconet in 1782. The statue was placed on the bank of the Neva River and quickly became a symbol of Russian power and imperial rule. It was originally intended to celebrate the victory of Peter the Great over the Swedes at Narva in 1701, but it was later reinterpreted to be a monument to the “Enlightened Despot” and to “embody the might of Saint Petersburg and the Russian Empire at large”.
