History:

The history of Yellowstone National Park dates back to as far as 11,000 years ago when American Indians lived in this area. The presence of these early inhabitants is traced through archaeological evidence and the stories of oral tradition. In 1807, John Colter, a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, became the first known white man to enter the area. He told stories of geysers and boiling mudpots, but people doubted his tales. By the mid 1800s, official exploration began as Americans ventured into this region of the Rocky Mountains, looking for fur and trading opportunities. In 1869, the Cook–Folsom–Peterson Expedition, led by U.S. Army Major Andrew Jackson was the first documented scientific exploration of the area. Famed photographer William Henry Jackson accompanied the expedition and his stunning photographs of the region later helped to convince Congress to create Yellowstone National Park in 1872. The Park quickly grew in popularity and by 1903 it had reached its first million visitors. The Park was expanded in 1915 when Congress established the northeast corner of the Park as National Forest land. Since its inception, the Park has continued to be a popular tourist destination, providing visitors with opportunities to explore some of America’s most iconic natural features. In 1978, Yellowstone became the first area in the United States to receive international protection when it was designated a United Nation's World Heritage Site. In 1988, the Park was designated a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. This distinction protects and conserves Yellowstone's natural resources for future generations.
