The exterior of the building was originally Georgian in style, but was changed over time to reflect the style of the time period. Its long front portico with six Ionic columns overlooks the central lawn, which was itself redesigned in the late 18th century to accommodate the crowds for important events. Inside, the Assembly Room was where important meetings and debates were held regarding the Declaration of Independence as well as the ratification of the U.S. Constitution.
