History:

The Monterey Bay Aquarium was opened in 1984 as a non-profit public aquarium in Monterey, California. It is located at the site of a former sardine cannery on Cannery Row on the Monterey Bay. The Aquarium is supported by donations from individuals, foundations, corporations and more than 74,000 members. It is one of the most visited aquariums in the world, with more than 2 million visitors annually. The Monterey Bay Aquarium was conceived in 1977 by David and Dorothy Packard, who had a love for the Bay and its marine life, and an interest in ocean conservation. With the help of the Stanford University’s Hopkins marine Station, the Packards obtained the financing to purchase the cannery. They succeed where others had failed by obtaining money to construct the Aquarium from state and local governments as well as from corporations, foundations and private donors. In 1981, construction began and the Aquarium was completed in three years and was officially opened to the public in 1984. The Monterey Bay Aquarium displays the richest seacoast life in the world.
