The National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. is a tribute to the Americans who served in the Allied forces during World War II. The Memorial was dedicated on May 29, 2004 in recognition of the more than 400,000 American lives lost during the war and to commemorate the millions of veterans and civilians who contributed to the Allied victory. In 1993, an effort began to create a memorial to Americans who served during the war. A group of citizens proposed that the memorial be placed in the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and Congress approved the project in 1995. The World War II Memorial Act authorized two major components: a $100 million memorial and a six- to eight-acre plaza to be located just south of the Lincoln Memorial, adjacent to the Reflecting Pool. The design of the monument was chosen from a competition that began in late 1997 and received 1,000 entries from all over the world. The memorial was designed by a team led by architect Friedrich St. Florian and landscape architect Martha Schwartz. The design consists of 56 pillars representing the states and territories in existence during the war, two 43-foot arches representing freedom in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters, a pool and fountain, a Freedom Wall, and several other features. Construction of the memorial began in September 2001 and was completed by June 2004. Funding for the memorial came from fundraising campaigns, private donations, and federal appropriations.
