History:

The ancient Mayan city of Tulum is located on the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. The city served as an important port, trading with other Mayan cities as far away as the Yucatan central lowlands and the Gulf and Caribbean coast of Central America. The city was known as ‘Zama’ or ‘City of Dawn’ by the Mayans and was built around 600 AD. Tulum was a city of political and economic importance, as it was positioned to control the navigation of the Mezcal river and provided important access to the Caribbean. The city's proximity to the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico, as well as the resources of the inland rainforest, made it an ideal location for the Mayans to carry on their ocean trade. The city was heavily fortified, surrounded by tall limestone walls, making it a perfect fortress from which the Mayans could control the trade routes through the Yucatan.
