The government selected a 12 meter-tall obelisk made of pink Cantera stone as the design. It was initially known as the Monumento a la Santa Cruz (Monument to the Holy Cross). In 1891, the monument underwent renovations to honor the Niños Héroes, transforming it into the Monument to the Niños Heroes. Chairel, a popular metal-worker from Mexico City, crafted the ironwork adorning the monument. Additionally, four bronze bas-relief sculptures depict the Niños Heroes in their moment of bravery during the battle.
