Trim Castle is a Norman castle on the south bank of the River Boyne in Trim, County Meath, Ireland. It was constructed in the late 12th century by Hugh de Lacy and phenomally enlarged by his son Walter, who also established a mint there. It is regarded as the largest Norman castle in Ireland. It once defined the boundary of the palatine liberty of Meath and served as the castle of Hugh de Lacy, Lord of Meath and his successor until the 16th century. It has been used as a filming location for Mel Gibson's Braveheart and, more recently, the 2011 Ironclad. It is one of the most beautiful monuments in Ireland

Trim Castle, located near Trim in County Meath, Ireland, is the largest Norman castle in Ireland. It was built by Hugh de Lacy and his son Walter in the late 12th century. The original castle was a simple wooden structure, but it was rebuilt in stone in 1173, and once served as the stronghold of the powerful Earl of Meath. Trim Castle has a troubled history, having been sacked multiple times throughout its history, first in 1210, when much of the original structure was destroyed, and later in 1315, when the castle was sacked by Edward Bruce, King of Ireland. It was also held by a number of different owners, including the Kildare Earls, the O’Reilly Clan and, most famously, the Earl of Ormond in the 16th century. The castle has had a number of uses over the centuries, it was used as a garrison, a prison, a residence, and, during the Cromwellian period, it was partially-destroyed by Oliver Cromwell’s troops.
