It was built in the early 18th Dynasty of the New Kingdom, during the reign of Amenhotep I (circa 1541-1520 BCE) and was restored by Ramesses II, who also added his name to the temple facade. The site of the temple was the ancient city of Waset and is believed to have been a religious site since the Middle Kingdom.
