Worship Method:

Taima-dera is a Buddhist temple in Japan which is famous for its Worship Method called “the Ritual of the Five Great Elements”. The five elements in this ritual are earth, water, fire, air, and void, which are symbolically used to represent creation, protection, enlightenment, transformation, and liberation. During the ritual, practitioners will chant and pray to invoke the five elements in order to manifest and receive the power and protection of the elements. The ritual will start at sundown and will include chanting at a standing altar using a Wakichi incantation. After the chanting, five wooden planks are placed on the altar shaped like a fire altar, and the practitioners will use a special pick to inscribe the names of the Five Great Elements on the planks. They will then place candles on the planks and lit them to signify their wishes for the manifestation of the power of the elements. By Car: Taima-dera is located approximately 30 minutes from Kurashiki Station on the JR Sanyo Line. Take the Sanyo Expressway to Kurashiki Interchange and then take Route 191 towards Fukuyama. Exit Route 191 at Hanaji Interchange and you will find Taima-dera in approximately 10 minutes. By Train and Bus: Take the JR Sanyo Line from Okayama Station to Kurashiki Station.
