Smolensk War Memorial In Russia: History,Facts, & Services
The Smolensk War Memorial is a memorial located in the city of Smolensk, Russia. It is dedicated to the memory of those who perished in the battle of Smolensk during World War II. The memorial was designed by the famous Soviet architect Boris Efimov and constructed in 1971. The memorial features a central spire, surrounded by a granite wall, on which the names of those killed in the battle are inscribed. The memorial also includes a sombre bronze bas-relief depicting the desperate struggle of Russian soldiers during the siege of Smolensk. The memorial serves as a constant reminder of the heroism of the defenders of Smolensk who sacrificed their lives in the struggle against fascism. In accordance with their families’ wishes, over 10,000 splinters of their tombs are kept at this site. Every year, the fallen are remembered in the traditional commemorative ceremony, held at the memorial.
