The construction of the Sistine Chapel began in 1473 under the direction of Pope Sixtus IV. The chapel was built in order to provide a papal chapel for important ceremonies in the Catholic Church. It was completed in 1483 and originally named the Cappella Magna ("Great Chapel"). The chapel was brilliantly decorated on both walls and ceiling with paintings by the leading artists of the time, including Sandro Botticelli, Pietro Perugino, Domenico Ghirlandaio, and Cosimo Rosselli. In 1508, Pope Julius II approached Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo initially refused, claiming that he did not have any experience painting in fresco. However, the Pope insisted and Michelangelo eventually relented. From 1508-1512, he worked constantly to create the large frescoes, depicting scenes from the Book of Genesis.
