History:
The Puno Cathedral in Peru is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in the city of Puno. The history of the cathedral dates back to the 16th century when Franciscan Friars arrived in Puno in the 1540s. They started building a small adobe church which was completed in 1645. In 1668, it was replaced by a church of clay bricks and stone, and this is the structure which currently forms the main body of the cathedral. The facade of the building was remodeled in the early 18th century, when it was redecorated with wood in neoclassical style, as can still be seen today. The cathedral underwent further changes in the 19th century, when a decorated mud-baked painting was placed over the main altar. This painting represented the Transfiguration of Jesus and was painted by Mariano Mayta, a local painter. Later on, a neo-classical style bell tower was added to the cathedral, built between 1891 and 1897. The tower was inaugurated by Hermanos Raymundo and Esteban Fitzmaurice on November 1st, 1896. Today, the Puno Cathedral is an important historical and religious landmark in the city. It continues to serve as the main place of worship for the local Catholic community and is open to visitors. Various religious festivals, processions and other events take place here throughout the year, often drawing throngs of worshippers from all over Peru.
