Philae Temple of Isis is an ancient temple complex located on an island in the Nile River in Aswan, Egypt. The temple apparently existed as far back as the 4th century BC, and was greatly expanded in the Ptolemaic period (305-30 B.C.E) during the reign of Ptolemy I, II, and VI. The original temple of Isis on Philae was damaged by floods, making it necessary for it to be relocated in the Roman period. The Romano-Egyptians built a new temple to Isis at Philae. This temple was very unique from the original one because it incorporated elements of Greco-Roman culture, such as depicting Isis as a female ruler and incorporating Greek architectural elements. The temple complex was eventually abandoned around the 10th century A.D., although there remain substantial remains of what was once a magnificent temple.
