Sphinx Avenue in Luxor In Egypt: History,Facts, & Services

Sphinx Avenue in Luxor is a paved avenue which is composed of two rows of sphinxes that leads to the Temple of Luxor. The avenue was designed to connect the temples of Karnak and Luxor. It is believed to have been constructed by Amenhotep III, a Pharaoh during the 18th dynasty of the New Kingdom. There are several theories as to why he created the avenue, with some believing it is an offering for his dead father and others suggesting it was intended to symbolize the unity of gods and kings. The avenue is formed by statues of the king alongside sphinxes, each measuring nearly six meters long and two meters high, with the king facing east towards the gods of the temple. The 72 statues of Amenhotep III remain in their original positions along the avenue.
