History:

The Pereslavl-Zalessky Historical, Architectural and Art Museum-Reserve was established by the Governor of Yaroslavl Region in 1982 and is located in the Russian city of Pereslavl-Zalessky. The Museum-Reserve has a long history stemming back to the 11th century when the city was founded. Situated along the banks of the Volga River, it was an important trading post along the Volga trade route. The city and it’s citadel, known as the Kremlin, have been home to a variety of different rulers and empires over the centuries, including the Mongols, the Yaroslavl Princes, the Grand Dukes of Moscow, and the Tsars. The Museum-Reserve was established to preserve and display the rich and varied cultural and historical heritage of the city. It initially held collections of local arts and crafts, such as icons and embroidery, as well as artifacts from several eras of Pereslavl-Zalessky’s past, such as from medieval, Slavic and Finnish times. In 1992, the Museum-Reserve was granted the highest rank among the Museum Administrations of the Russian Federation, and since then has gone on to establish itself as one of the foremost tourist attractions in the region.
