Evidence of volcanic activity dates back hundreds of thousands of years, with some accounts suggesting that a 3 million year-old lava flow lies beneath the current surface. The volcano has erupted multiple times throughout written history, sometimes with disastrous effects. The earliest known written account of Mount Etna’s volcanic activity is found in Homer’s Iliad, which dates back to the 8th century BCE. The legendary Greek hero Aeneas is described as having climbed Mount Etna, and the poem details numerous sculptures formed by lava during eruptions. The first major recorded eruption of Mount Etna took place in 425 BCE and involved the destruction of the ancient Greek colony of Zancle. This event is thought to have inspired Euripides' play, The Cyclops.
