History:
The monument to Alexander Pushkin in Russia was unveiled on June 8, 1880, on the 25th anniversary of Pushkin’s death. The monument was commissioned by Tsar Alexander III, and it was designed by his favorite sculptor, Mikhail Mikeshin. The monument, situated in the center of Moscow near Pushkin Square, serves as a memorial to the great Russian poet. The monument consists of a bronze bust of Pushkin atop a pedestal of red granite. The pedestal is encircled with a bronze casting of an open laurel wreath, which was later added to the monument in 1885. The back of the pedestal is inscribed with a passage from Pushkin’s “Eugene Onegin:” “The Russian language is my only homeland.” In the early days of the Soviet Union, the monument was viewed as a symbol of Russian nationalism and was targeted by the Soviet government. The bust of Pushkin was removed and replaced with a bust of Karl Marx, and the wreath was removed. The monument was also relocated to a park nearby. However, after Russia declared its independence in 1991, the monument was returned to its original location and was repaired and restored. The bust of Pushkin and the wreath were reinstalled, and the monument was rededicated by President Boris Yeltsin in 1996.
