The Mastaba of Ptahhotep is a funerary monument located in the ancient necropolis of Saqqara, Egypt. Built during the 5th Dynasty, it is believed to have been constructed for Ptahhotep, an important vizier of the Pharaoh Djedkare Isesi. Its name, translated from Greek as ‘bench’, is derived from the low-lying rectangular shape of the structure, which is decorated with exquisite reliefs depicting scenes from daily life in ancient Egypt. The mastaba is noted for the preservation of its hieroglyphic inscriptions, which have been of great interest to Egyptologists and historians. Saqqara is one of the most important archaeological sites in Egypt, with some of the earliest monuments ever discovered in the country. The Mastaba of Ptahhotep was discovered by English Egyptologist Flinders Petrie in 1880 during an excavation of the site. It is thought to have been built around 2300 BC and consists of a large mud-brick structure, facing south, with several small rooms built on a north–south axis. The mastaba is enclosed by a wall more than five meters high and the entrance is located to the east. The mastaba contains two inscribed monuments, the first depicting Ptahhotep offering a libation to the gods, and the second showing Ptahhotep greeting his wife and children in the Town Square. In addition, the mastaba contains a large number of reliefs depicting scenes from everyday life including musical and hunting scenes, fishermen, dancers, musicians, and officials. The interior walls of the mastaba are also decorated with an impressive array of hieroglyphs spanning a range of topics such as religious rituals, funerary practices, and prayers.
