The Mariinsky Palace, also known as the Engineers' Castle, is a Baroque palace in the Nevsky Avenue of Saint Petersburg, Russia. It is the official residence of the Governor of Saint Petersburg. The history of Mariinsky Palace began in 1762, when Empress Catherine the Great ordered the construction of a palace to be the residence of her favorite, Grigory Orlov. The project was entrusted to Antonio Rinaldi, one of the most prominent architects of the day, who designed a two-story building in the Baroque style. The facade was decorated with two columns and eight statues of warriors. In December 1797, the building was turned into a residence for Prince Alexander, son of Paul I. In 1856, it was renamed the Mariinsky Palace in honour of Mary, the wife of Alexander III. In the following years, modifications were made to the building, which could no longer accommodate the royal family. In 1924, the Mariinsky Palace became the official residence of the Governor of St. Petersburg. During the Soviet period, the building was used as the headquarters of the Communist Party, and later as the headquarters of the KGB. In 1996, the palace was turned over to the State Museum of St. Petersburg, who restored the building to its original state.
