Manege Central Exhibition Hall was opened to the public in May 1817. The building was designed by architect and engineer Vasily Stasov and was one of the most important monuments of Neoclassical architecture in Moscow. The purpose of the hall was to host large exhibitions of fine art, and it later became a center of cultural life in the city. Various events like concerts, lectures, and festivals, were regularly held at the Manege until the early 20th century. During the Soviet era, the building was used for temporary exhibitions on economy and culture, while in 1974–1977 it housed the first All-Union Museum of Sport and Physical Culture.
