It is the sole Orthodox congregation in Gunma Prefecture and is part of the Autonomous Orthodox Church of Japan. The Orthodox Church in Japan began in the late 19th century at the invitation of the Japanese government seeking technological assistance from Russia. The first Orthodox liturgy in Japanese was held in 1896 and the Church has grown in numbers since then. In 1960, Fr. Chariton, then the general vicar of Tokyo, founded the Maebashi Orthodox Church.
