Worship Method:
, Tenryū-ji is a major temple of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism. Like other Rinzai temples, Tenryū-ji employs liturgy and practices associated with the Sōtō school of Zen as well as its own school-specific ways of expressing devotion and faith. Within Tenryū-ji, worship consists of several different forms of meditation, chanting and ritual. The main form of meditation practiced by Tenryū-ji is known as zazen, or seated meditation. This involves sitting on a cushion and using a combination of breathing, concentration of the mind and bodily postures to achieve a state of pure awareness. This is a form of meditation similar to that seen in other Rinzai temples. The chanting of mantras is an important practice at Tenryū-ji. Common mantras include the Heart Sutra, the Diamond Sutra and the Lotus Sutra. The Heart Sutra is the most important one, embodying the teachings of the Buddha. A popular ritual at Tenryū-ji is the Circle Walking Meditation, a practice of focusing the mind and body while walking the circumference of a temple garden. In addition to these practices, the temple also holds regular Japanesestyle sutra lectures in which a monk or priest reads aloud a selection of sutras and interprets their meaning. The temple’s services also feature song-filled services with traditional musical instruments such as a four-holed flute and a Japanese harp. Finally, festivals are held at the temple throughout the year including the annual Tenryū-ji Matsuri in July, which features a parade of portable shrines. This most visited temple in Japan
