The Luxor Obelisk is one of two obelisks located in front of the Luxor Temple in Luxor, Egypt. An ancient remnant of Egypt, the Luxor Obelisk is one of the few remaining structures to survive the ravages of time. The obelisk, originally standing in the Temple of Karnak, was moved to its current position in 1831 by French scholars and architects as part of an ambitious project to gather together all of the obelisks from Ancient Egypt. The Luxor Obelisk itself is 39 meters (128 feet) in height and is composed of two pieces of red granite. The top section is decorated with hieroglyphs from the 18th Dynasty, while the bottom section is carved with scenes of Ramesses II’s triumph in a battle against the Hittites. Both sections feature a pointed tip at the top, known as an “infinite flower”. The obelisk was likely originally erected by Pharaoh Thutmose III in 1515 BC and the scenes and hieroglyphs on either section of the obelisk are intended to commemorate a truce between the Egyptians and the Hittites.
