History:
The Library of Alexandria, also known as the Great Library of Alexandria, was one of the largest and most influential libraries of the ancient world. It was built in the 3rd century BCE by the Hellenistic ruler, Ptolemy I Soter, at the ancient Egyptian city of Alexandria. The Library’s collections were enriched by the efforts of Ptolemy II Philadelphus and Ptolemy III Euergetes. It was estimated that at its peak, the Library held anywhere between 40,000 and 400,000 scrolls and books. The Library’s collections included works in nearly all fields of Greek learning and lore, including astronomy, philosophy, mathematics, biology, history, science, history, and geography. It was said to contain works by great writers and thinkers, such as Euclid, Archimedes, Hippocrates, Sophocles, Aeschylus, Herodotus, Plato, and Aristotle. The Library was destroyed by fire during the Roman invasion in 32 BCE, with the extent of destruction debated by scholars. The cause of the fire is unknown. Although some reports blame the Romans for the destruction, more recent research suggests that the Library had been decaying since the death of Ptolemy III in 246 BCE. Evidence suggests that the Library had not been maintained by succeeding kings, and that it was already in a fragile state of disrepair when the Romans arrived. Whatever the true cause, the destruction of the Library marked the end of the intellectual legacy of Alexandria. Visit one of the famous monuments of Egypt with your friends and family.
