History:

The Kremlin of Kostroma has a long history, beginning with its inception in the early 16th century. It was one of the first fortifications built by Ivan the Great in his attempt to build a unified Russian state. Located on the Volga River, the Kremlin was meant to serve as a stronghold against threats from the east. As a result, the Kremlin saw many sieges over the years, such as in 1571 when Ivan the Terrible attempted to take it from the Novgorod Republic. During the Time of Troubles (1604-1613), the Kostroma Kremlin was captured by Polish-Lithuanian forces. It was eventually liberated and re-fortified by the Russian forces commanded by Vasiliy Golitsyn. The Kostroma Kremlin played a crucial role during the great siege of 1613, when it served as a base from which Dmitry Pozharsky led his troops against the invaders. As a reward for his efforts, Tsar Mikhail gave Pozharsky the Kostroma Kremlin as a personal estate. In the 18th century, the Kostroma Kremlin was remodeled and expanded. New gates, towers, and ramparts were erected, as well as a church dedicated to Dmitry Pozharsky. The majority of the original structures within the Kremlin survived, including several palaces that lie within its walls.
