History:
Kolomna Kremlin is a fortified site located in the city of Kolomna, in the Moscow region of Russia. The site was founded in 1177 as an eastern outpost of the principality of Ryazan. It has a long and rich history of being an important stronghold for the defense of Moscow against the invading forces of the Tatars and Lithuanians. In the late 15th century, the walls of the Kremlin were extended and strengthened to better protect it from attacks by the Tatars. The walls were built from stone, wood, and strengthened with deep ravines and moats. During this period, the Kremlin was also home to the ruler of the Moscow principality. In the 16th century, the Kremlin was remodeled and extended again, with additional fortifications and towers added to the site. The most impressive of these is the Ivan the Great Bell Tower, which stands 65m tall and dominates the skyline of Kolomna. It is still in use today, and its bells can be heard throughout the city. In 1571, Kolomna Kremlin was the site where Grand Duke Ivan IV (known as Ivan the Terrible) was suffering punishment for his crimes of unrestrained power. This event marked the start of the decline of the Kremlin's importance as a military stronghold. During the 17th century, the Kremlin fell into disrepair and the walls lost much of their strength. In the early 18th century, the site was used as a prison, with many political dissidents being held there. Despite the neglect of the 18th century, the Kremlin was restored in the 19th century and is now a popular tourist attraction in Kolomna. The restored Kolomna Kremlin now includes a museum, several churches, and a cemetery, and attracts thousands of visitors each year.
