The museum is located in the Öland County town of Kalmar and covers centuries of Swedish artistic development from the Middle Ages until the Present. Admission to the museum is free. The museum was founded as a result of the efforts of the Swedish artist Axel Aren. He donated his private collection to the people of Kalmar, and this formed the nucleus of the museum's collections. Through further donations from artists, collectors and benefactors, the museum has grown to include over 3,000 works of art. The collections include works by Carl Larsson, Anders Zorn, Bruno Liljefors and other Swedish masters, as well as international masters such as Rembrandt, Monet, Chagall, and Picasso.
