History:

Gustavianum is a museum and academic building in Uppsala, Sweden. It was originally erected in 1622–1625 as the main building of Uppsala University, replacing the former Collegium regium Gustavianum. The Gustavianum is located within the Historic Quadrangle of Uppsala, together with the Uppsala Cathedral and Uppsala Castle. The building was originally designed by Olaus Sylenius and completed under the direction of G. E. Greiffenhagen. Later, in 1876–1889, it was replaced as main building of the university by the present-day Uppsala University Main Building, and the museum side of the building was opened in 1871. In 1954, the university transferred ownership of the building to Uppsala University Museum, which includes the museum, the Gustavianum Library and the Gustavianum archive. The building also hosts the University's Arts Council, the Body Centre, and a café. The Gustavianum is named after King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden, who commissioned the building in 1619 as part of his plans to establish a university in Uppsala. The building is now a popular cultural attraction, offering permanent and temporary exhibitions as well as educational activities and lectures.
