Graan Monastery In Ireland: History,Facts, & Services
Graan Monastery is a Benedictine Abbey in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It was founded in 1721 by Bishop William O’Daly of Kilmore diocese and is widely regarded as the longest-running Roman Catholic house of worship in the country. The Abbey is situated on the shores of Upper Lough Erne and is surrounded by parkland and woodlands.

History:
The original foundation was located in County Cavan in 1716 and was moved to its current location in 1721. After being founded, the abbey was blessed and opened by Bishop O’Daly. However, the abbey at Graan soon fell into difficulty and was disbanded by Papal Decree in 1814 due to its poor financial situation. It was revived in 1838 and was placed under the care of the new Bishop of Kilmore, Rt. Rev. Dr. William McNally. The abbey has gone through extensive restoration and improvements since then, with new chapels being added. Graan Monastery This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Ireland.

Graan Monastery is home to the St. Columba’s Canonical Community, a group of monks and sisters living under the rule of Saint Benedict. The Abbey also features three hermitages in addition to the main abbey building.
