In the early 20th century, the palace was converted into a military residence and barracks of the Imperial Russian Army. During the First World War, the palace was used as a military hospital. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, the palace was home to various educational and cultural institutions. In 1941, during the Second World War, the Nazi army invaded and practically destroyed the palace complex. After the War, the palace was restored to its former glory thanks to the efforts of some committed people in Gatchina. Since 1959, the palace complex has been open to the public and has become a popular tourist attraction.
