Gatchina Palace and Park is a cultural and historical complex located in Gatchina, Leningrad Oblast, near St. Petersburg, Russia. It was a residence for Tsar Paul I of Russia, who led the transformation of Gatchina from a village to a grand palace in the 18th century. Gatchina Palace and Park was commissioned by Tsar Paul I in 1765, as a summer residence – a luxurious estate located well outside of the city. On his orders, the fortress walls were built, filled with water, and lined with canals, lakes and terraces. The Grand Palace was built to resemble an Italian villa surrounded by lush gardens and parks. Over the years, the palace was renovated and extended with new and luxurious additions, including a chessboard park, ornate palatial apartments, grand ballrooms and the magnificent Cathedral of St. Trinity.
