Delphi is an ancient city located in central Greece approximately 5 hours away from the capital of Athens. It is best known as the home of the Delphic oracle, a Greek temple where prophets consulted a priestess to seek spiritual advice and offer sacrificial gifts to the god Apollo. This site was considered to be the center of the world in the ancient Greek Empire and was also believed to be the symbol of unity among all the Greek city-states. Delphi's recorded history began in the 8th century BC when the Greeks established the town under the guidance of the god Apollo. It soon became an important center for worship and religious ceremonies. In 548 BC a Pythia (priestess) was installed in the sanctuary in order to deliver insight and prophetic words to individuals that came from all over Greece. It was said that the oracle's "apollo" could foresee the destiny of individuals, empires, and battles. In addition to its spiritual heritage, Delphi also held many political and economic meetings. It was here that the Kingdom of Macedon and the Roman Empire were formed and the city was once the wealthiest hub in continental Europe during the Hellenistic period. In the 4th century CE, Christianity slowly began to replace pagan beliefs and the Delphic Oracle no longer consulted. In 390 CE, the temple was destroyed by Emperor Theodosius’ army. Today, Delphi is an archaeological site open to the public.
