The church was established in 1525 by Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, biographer of King Henry VIII, who wanted to create a college and a cathedral in Oxford to rival Cambridge. In 1546, as part of Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries, Christ Church became a collegiate foundation by royal charter. It was named after the Incarnation of Jesus (Christ Church) and its first fellows were largely drawn from the ranks of scholars who had once served in the monasteries.
