Christ Church Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Dublin, the spiritual head of the Anglican Church of Ireland. Located on the south side of Dublin in the center of the historic city, the cathedral was first established in 1030 by the then-Viking King of Dublin, Sitric Silkenbeard. Built in a Romanesque and Gothic style, the cathedral is the largest medieval Anglican cathedral in Ireland. The first cathedral on the site was founded in 1030 as a monastic church, making it one of the oldest buildings in the city. The church was destroyed during the Norman invasion of Ireland in 1088 and was rebuilt in 1172. The current building dates from the early 13th century. During its long history, the cathedral suffered several attacks, the most serious of which was in 1649 when Oliver Cromwell destroyed it. It was subsequently restored but was badly damaged in an earthquake that struck the city in 1650. The cathedral was then restored again in 1705. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Ireland.
