is a city and municipality located in the south of the Mexican state of Campeche. It is situated at 18°25'N, 90°32'W, on the east bank of the Mezcalapa River, and is the administrative seat of the surrounding municipality of the same name. Becan was founded by the Maya in the Classic Period (250-900 AD). It is a large archaeological site of around 5 km2 and is enclosed by a wall measuring about 4.5 km in length. The architecture of the site is typical of Late Classic sites and is surrounded by the Nohoch Na Chich ecological reserve. Becan has been identified with the main center of the ancient Mayan province of Xamanzana. The name is derived from the Mayan phrase "becan ahau", meaning "the guardian chief or leader". Becan was an important political, ceremonial and military center during the Late and Terminal Classic Periods (750-900 AD). It served as the main base of the Cocom kings when the city was at its peak during the 9th century AD. The city was eventually abandoned in the early 10th century, likely due to increasing pressure from the Toltec and other peoples of central Mexico.
