Worship Method:
The worship method of the Kabah in Yucatan, Mexico differs from the traditional methods of Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca. The traditional Hajj is centered around walking in continuous circles around the Kaaba, the center of the Sacred Mosque of Mecca, and offering ritual prayers. In contrast to the Hajj, local Mayan worshippers in Yucatan perform the Nadaam Cabah ceremony, a pilgrimage that revolves around a reenactment of the ancient Maya creation myths. On the sixth day of the Maya sacred ceremony, the group walks in a continuous circle around the depictions of the moon, sun, and Venus, which symbolize the three Maya gods. The pilgrims bring offerings and recite prayers to each deity in turn. As they make their way around the circle, they end by offering specifically to the Kabah—a representation of the moon in Yucatan. Because of its location and its rich Native American history, the Kabah in Yucatan is considered to be a sacred site for both Mayan and Islamic worshippers. The ancient Maya believed the site to be a place of divine power and used it as a place of worship and pilgrimage. Although the traditional Islamic tenets of prayer and prostration are not required during the Nadaam Cabah ceremony, Mayan worshipers honor and revere the Kabah as a place of spiritual significance.
