The Assumption Cathedral was built in the late 15th century by the architect Aristotele Fioravanti. Initially it was part of the Kremlin but its expansion led to it becoming a separate church. In 1588 it was upgraded to its current status as a main cathedral when the Great Prince Ivan the Terrible made it the principal metropolitan of the Russian Orthodox Church. Between 1625 and 1635, it was renovated by the architect Bazhen Ogurtsov and the interior was decorated using icons and iconostasis.
