The original Annaghdown Church dates from the early sixteenth century. It was founded by the late fifteenth century Norman knight and explorer, Sir Raymond FitzGerald, and was initially attached to the Abbey of Athenry. After the Reformation, it became the property of the Mayor of Galway, who then leased it to the Anglican Church of Ireland.
