Abu Simbel Temples: Abu Simbel is a site of two nearly identical temples located in the southern area of Egypt, along the western banks of Lake Nasser, close to the border of Sudan. History:

Today, the area where Abu Simbel is located was once known as Nubia. According to records from his reign, Pharaoh Ramesses II chose the site in order to glorify himself, his queen, Nefertari and their four children. Built over a period of about 20 years, the temples of Abu Simbel are situated directly in the middle of a sandstone rock face. They contain statues of Ramesses II and his queen, along with several depictions of the god Ra-horakhty, the god Amun and may other gods. Abu Simbel holds two temples, the Great Temple and the Small Temple. Inside the Great Temple, there is an inner chamber with a sanctuary, three chapels, and four statues representing Ramesses II, Ra-Horakhty, Amun-Ra, and Ptah. On the outer wall, four 20-meter figures of Ramesses II, carved from the solid rock, stand guard at the entrance. Inside the Small Temple are carvings of Ramesses and his queen with the goddess Hathor.
