Worship Method:

The worship methods of Tarapith Kali Mandir in Birbhum, West Bengal are quite distinct. The goddess worshipped in the temple is the local deity Ma Tara, who is the female form of the Hindu god Shiva. The temple is one of the Shakti Peethas where the right foot of the goddess Sati is said to have fallen. The morning worship of the temple starts with the recitation of Aarti, Yajma and Panchopachar Puja. Various mantras and hymns are also sung while offering something to the goddess known as ‘Bhoga’. Devotees offer flowers, fruits, grains, lamps, incense and other things to appease the goddess. Later, a traditional ritual called ‘Chalia’ is performed by taking the idol of Ma Tara on a procession around the temple. The main ritual of Tarapith temple is the Mata Chandi and Matka Puja, performed during special occasions. In this ritual, two earthen pots are filled with offerings, such as milk, ghee, fruits, flowers, grains and coin. Then, a cloth is placed over these two pots and a priest performs the puja, singing powerful mantras devoted to the Mother Goddess. The central part of the worship here involves the Tantric Sadhana, which is a practice of intense spiritual practices for a longer period of time. During this religious procedure, the devotees make offerings of food, flowers and clothes among other things to the Goddess. Upon completion of the Sadhana, the devotees receive blessings from Ma Tara. Apart from the Tantric rituals, thousands of devotees also participate in the unique ‘Kanak Durga’ ritual. Here, small children are initiated into Mahakali’s tantric path and given the permission to perform sacred chanting and recitations of powerful mantras in the temple.
