The Cathedral was built under the French colonial rule and was dedicated to honour the patron saint of Hanoi, St. Joseph. The construction of the Cathedral took eight years and was completed in 1886. The Cathedral was designed by architect Father Joseph Bresson and reflects a mix of Gothic and Romanesque styles. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Vietnam.
