History:

Phu Quoc is a small island located in the Gulf of Thailand, off the coast of Kien Giang province in Vietnam. Along with white sandy expanses, Phu Quoc has a rich 17th-century history that has shaped its present. The archipelago that includes Phu Quoc Island can be dated back to the 17th century when it was first settled by a group of Chinese migrants. These founders were fishermen and farmers that set up small coastal communities on the surrounding islets and the main island. In 1814, the Nguyen dynasty, the ruling family of Vietnam at the time, officially recognized the sovereignty of Phu Quoc in an edict. When the French colonial powers arrived in the late 19th century, they established control over the island and built a major fish sauce factory there in 1915. The island was transformed into a strategic military base for the South Vietnamese government during the Vietnam War. After Vietnam was reunited under a single government in 1975, Phu Quoc experienced a period of economic stagnation due to its remoteness and its dependence on fish sauce production. This changed in 1989 when the government formally turned the island into a province and began a program of investment and infrastructure to develop its tourism industry. In recent years, the island has seen a surge in tourism with beautiful beachside resorts being built and new infrastructure being created.
