History:
The history of the Maiquetía Lighthouse in Vargas State, Venezuela dates back to 1897 when the lighthouse was first established. The initial lighthouse was a wooden structure with an open flame fueled by whale oil. In 1904 the wooden lighthouse was replaced by a granite tower. The new tower was equipped with a Fresnel lens and oil fueled light. By 1918, the oil fueled light was replaced with an electric light powered by generators. The Maiquetía Lighthouse has gone through several upgrades over the years including the installation of a new 1,000 watt lamp in 1974, a solar powered light system in 2017, and a radio beacon in 2019. The tower is open daily to the public and is one of the most visited lighthouses in Venezuela. In 2017 the Maiquetía Lighthouse was declared a National Historical Monument as part of the country’s celebration of its 200th anniversary of independence. The lighthouse is now maintained by Venezuela’s Naval Infantry and is one of the few active lighthouses in the country.
