History:

Kot Bhramari Temple is one of the oldest temples in Uttarakhand. It is located on a hillock, near the village of Malla, Almora which used to be known as ‘Vikramaditya Trailokya’. The temple is dedicated to the goddess Bhramari Devi, who is considered to be the consort of Lord Shiva. According to an ancient myth, the temple was built by King Bhagirath, to appease the wrath of Bhramari Devi, who was angry at the destruction of her forests by the king’s army. The temple was damaged and destroyed several times over the ages, but was re-built in the 18th and 19th centuries. Kot Bhramari Temple is architecturally very unique and attractive. The Mandapam (entrance hall) is constructed in traditional North Indian style and is flanked by two turrets. There is a beautiful Nandi sculpture on the main entrance of the temple and various other sculptures adorn its walls. Inside the temple, apart from the main deity Bhramari Devi, there are harmonious symbols of Hindu faith like Ganesh, Shiva, Parvati, and Hanuman. The temple complex also houses a naga kund (reservoir). Kot Bhramari Temple is one of the few Shakti Peeths in Uttarakhand and enjoys great religious significance among the devotees of the Hindu faith. Every year, during the festival of Navratri, a grand fair is held here, with thousands of devotees pouring into the temple premises to pay their respects to Bhramari Devi.
