Chitai Golu Devta Temple is one of the most revered temples in Uttarakhand, located near Almora city. It is dedicated to Golu Devta, a Daitya King believed to be an incarnation of Lord Shiva. The worship of Golu Devta is held in great reverence in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. The worship of Chitai Golu Devta began in the mid-nineteenth century, however, the temple was constructed much later. Worship of Golu Devta is considered as one of the oldest traditional practices still prevailing in Kumaon.The temple is renowned for its serene environment and pilgrimage centers. Worshipping Golu Devta involves a unique form of worship known as the Jagarata. In this form of worship, a person will take an oath to serve and do ‘puja’ to Lord Golu Devta. Along with the Jagarata, people also perform other rituals and offerings. These include lighting earthen lamps, making offerings of flowers, fruits, meals, betel leaves and camphor before Golu Devta.
