History:

The stunning Bodiam Castle is located in East Sussex, England, and is a Grade I listed building. This incredible fourteenth-century castle was constructed by Sir Edward Dalyngridge. Built to defend against the French invasion of 1377, the castle grounds represent the perfect example of a fortified manor house. The origins of Bodiam Castle can be traced back to 1205 when KingJohn granted the Dallingridge family lands surrounding the current location. Over four centuries later the castle itself appears to have been constructed on the lands. The first records of its existence appear officially in 1385 when a deed granted Robert de Passele "the castle of Bodiham" and the lands attached to it. This is the earliest physical evidence of Bodiam Castle as it stands today. It is believed that the castle was intended to serve two purposes: to act as a fortified home, and to act as a moated fortification to ward against possible invading French forces. In 1437, the castle and its lands passed into the hands of Sir Edward Dalyngridge, and would remain under the ownership of the Dalyngridge’s until 1609 when the family passed away. The castle played an important role during the Wars of the Roses when it came under siege in 1483 by Thomas, Baron Lovel. After this there appears to have been no further involvement with the castle for about 1500 years, until Baron George Goring occupied the castle during the Civil War. During this time, he had the castle besieged by a Cromwellian force and it was almost destroyed in the process. In the eighteenth century, the castle and its lands began to be neglected and eventually fell into disrepair. The castle was abandoned in the nineteenth century, when the last of the Dalyngridge's died. However, a series of owners, including the Duke of Cumberland and Edward Hudson, began to restore the castle over the next two centuries. Today, Bodiam Castle is a Grade I listed building and is one of the most iconic surviving castles in the United Kingdom.
