Westboro Baptist Church is an independent Baptist church located in Topeka, Kansas, United States. It is the source of the controversial "God Hates Fags" slogan. The church has been widely described as a hate group and is known for its extreme statements against homosexuality, Catholics, Mormons, Muslims, Jews, American soldiers, and non-Western religions.
History
Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) was founded in 1955 by Fred Phelps Sr., a former lawyer. The church was initially part of the Southern Baptist Convention but was later founded as an independent Baptist church. The main purpose of the church was to communicate the message that God was punishing the world for its sin, especially those related to homosexuality.
Facts
The church is best known for its picketing activities at funerals of soldiers, gay people, celebrities, and members of other religions. They were famously banned from picketing funerals in the U.S. in 2011, after they picketed the funeral of U.S. Army Sgt. Matthew A. Snyder in 2006. WBC's picketing activities have been widely condemned by the public, national and international governments and organizations, and some churches.
